In this guitar lesson we’re going to learn the names of all six open strings. This is important, because you have to know the names of the open strings in order to learn how to tune the guitar. It also helps in learning all the note names up and down the guitar fretboard.
Let’s quickly review the numbering system for the strings. The first string is your thinnest one and sixth string is your thickest one. When it comes to learning the names of the open strings on the guitar it’s a little bit counterintuitive. Most people start learning the names of the open strings starting with the sixth string. The name of the thickest string right here is an E, then you have an A, D, G, B, and E.
You may be thinking that there is no way you can remember all of those open string names. That’s what I thought at the beginning too. I didn’t have a really good way to remember them. I finally got sick of it and decided to come up with just a little saying to help me remember the names. That saying is “Eat All Day Go to Bed Early.” That may sound silly to you, but use whatever saying works for you. It worked for me. After not knowing the names of the open strings for a long time, I finally knew them. .
Another thing that might help you is to be aware that the outside two strings are E strings. That way you only have to memorize four more strings. Knowing the names of the open strings is going to help you a lot in future lessons.
